Bayern-trainer Jupp Heynckes zal geen beroep kunnen doen op David Alaba, Luiz Gustavo en Holger Badstuber. On Tuesday, the first leg of the semifinal battle between Munich and Real Madrid ended with a Mario Gomez strike in the 90th minute, giving Munich a 2-1 lead heading back to the Santiago Bernabeu. The win gives the German side hope that they will be able to return to the Allianz Arena as a home side in the final, which takes place in late May.

Frenchman Franck Ribery opened the scoring for Bayern in the 17th minute, giving his club a 1-0 advantage into halftime. However, Mesut Ozil equalized in the second half for Madrid, giving the side a precious away goal that could come in handy in the second leg. Despite this, Gomez's goal to end the game will leave Los Blancos frustrated heading back to Spain, as the club will have an uphill battle over at least the next 90 minutes of the semifinal.

Chelsea shocked the world as they held Barcelona scoreless through the first 90 minutes of their semifinal at Stamford Bridge. Ivorian international Didier Drogba scored the lone goal in the match, giving the Blues a much-needed advantage. However, heading to Camp Nou and pulling off anything less than a draw will be difficult for the West London side, though it will be needed to advance to the final. The Chelsea defense will need to be in top form if the club is to pull off the upset, as Lionel Messi and company will be looking to exact a bit of revenge.

Barcelona will take on Chelsea in the second leg of their tie on April 24, while Madrid and Munich will battle the next day. The winners will face-off in Munich on May 19 for the final.

Daarin kwam het terecht met als tegenstanders SSC Napoli, Manchester City en Villareal CF. Ondanks deze pittige loting wist Bayern M?nchen bovenaan in de groep te eindigen. Alleen de uitwedstrijd in Manchester werd verloren, maar toen was 'FC Hollywood' al geplaatst.
In de achtste finale leek het bijna mis te gaan voor Bayern M?nchen. In de uitwedstrijd tegen FC Basel verloren de mannen van Heynckes namelijk met 1-0. In de Allianz Arena werden de Zwitsers echter met 7-0 verpulverd.

In de kwartfinale werd Olympique Marseille twee maal met 2-0 opzij gezet, waardoor Bayern M?nchen in de halve finale mocht aantreden tegen het grote Real Madrid. Na een 2-1 thuisoverwinning kwam het in Madrid aan op strafschoppen. Mede door het goede keeperswerk van Neuer gingen aan het einde van de avond alle Duitse handen de lucht in.
Chelsea FC kende eveneens een lastige poule met Valencia CF, Bayer Leverkusen en KRC Genk als tegenstanders. Niet voor niets plaatste de Londenaren zich pas in de laatste speelronde van de groepsfase voor de volgende ronde. Door een 3-0 overwinning op Stamford Bridge gingen 'The Blues' ten koste van Valencia CF door naar de volgende ronde.

Ook de achtste finale liep niet bepaald soepel voor Chelsea CF. In Napoli werd namelijk met 3-1 verloren van de plaatselijk voetbalclub. De Engelsen hadden in de return een verlenging nodig om de Italianen alsnog over de knie te leggen. In de 105e minuut scoorde Ivanovic de bevrijdende vierde treffer.
In de kwartfinale werd Benfica CF relatief eenvoudig uitgeschakeld met een 1-0 en 2-1 overwinning. In de halve finale konden de Londenaren vervolgens hun borst nat maken, want ze mochten het gaan opnemen tegen FC Barcelona. Na een knappe 1-0 thuisoverwinning werd het in Barcelona 2-2 waardoor Chelsea FC alsnog op een grote prijs mag hopen.

The assumption is that Poland's hard-core hooligan groups will cause trouble during the championship and abuse foreign fans and players.

Theo van Seggelen, secretary general of players' union Fifpro, told the BBC recently he was not "100% convinced" that "accidents" would not occur both inside and outside stadiums if the majority of fans watching the matches came from the co-host nations, Poland and Ukraine.

Racist incidents do still occur in grounds across the country but mainly in the lower leagues and they are more infrequent than before.

The Never Again association monitors racism in Poland and its booklet, Hateful, gives a flavour of incidents at grounds.

It describes a derby match from November 2008 in Krakow between the city's teams, Cracovia and Wisla, whose rivalry is such that it is described here as a "holy war".

Some Wisla fans sang an anti-Semitic song about the supposed Jewish origins of their rivals and when a Cracovia player left the pitch, fans shouted: "To the gas chambers."

When the match ended Wisla players went over to their fans to thank them, some of them making obscene chants about Jews.

Beforehand, some Cracovia fans made monkey noises at Wisla's Brazilian player, Cleber, when he was sent off.

But this is not the whole picture. Wisla now have two Israeli players in their first team, and one of them, David Biton, is the club's top scorer this season.

Most teams have foreign players these days and when they score, whether they are white, black or Jewish, the supporters cheer.

'Monkey, go back'
According to a recent Fifpro survey of professional players in Eastern Europe, 9.6% of respondents said they had been victims of racism, mainly from supporters. In Poland, the figure was 9.5%.

In the region, 11.7 % of respondents said they had been victims of violence from fans, coaches and management. In Poland the corresponding figure was 6.3%.

Senegalese defender Pape Samba Ba, 30, was assaulted twice in Opole, south-west Poland, when he played for the city's Odra Opole club.

"I started playing here more than six years ago and then they didn't have the security," he told the BBC.

"The fans would scream 'monkey, go back to your country'. Now it's changing, the stadiums are getting better."

Bruno Coutinho, 26, a Brazilian midfielder for Polonia Warsaw who plays in Poland's top-flight Ekstraklasa division, has never been a victim of racism and says he has a good relationship with his teammates and coaches.

But he did witness racism while playing for Jagiellonia Bialystok in north-eastern Poland in 2009.

"They signed an 18 or 19-year-old black guy from Colombia," he told the BBC.

"During a pre-season friendly match some of our own fans were making monkey noises at him. It was the first time I had experienced anything like that."

Coutinho's dark-skinned brother recently visited him in Warsaw.

"We were walking in the centre and people would look at him like a person from another planet," he recalls.

"I don't know whether it's racism or whether people are not used to seeing black people. I'm not saying it's everyone or everywhere."

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo made several changes to the team that saw off Liverpool on Saturday to win the FA Cup.
